‘OVR: Miami Beach’: Participating Galleries, Highlights and Additional Programming

The December edition of Art Basel's Online Viewing Rooms will feature an international lineup of 255 leading galleries from 30 countries and territories across North and South America, as well as Europe, Asia, and Africa. The presentations will be accompanied by a program of online events, including talks and gallery walk-throughs. Local museums, galleries, and cultural organizations will host various exhibitions and activations on the ground during Miami Art Week. Continuing this year, the City of Miami Beach will be purchasing an artwork presented by one of the participating galleries in ‘OVR: Miami Beach’ as part of their Legacy Purchase Program. The Online Viewing Rooms will run from December 4 to December 6, 2020, with preview days from December 2 to December 4, 2020.

Collectors will be able to discover nearly 2,500 exceptional works from 1900 to the present, including painting, sculpture, drawings, installation, and photography, as well as video and digital works.

26 galleries will be participating in Art Basel Miami Beach for the first time: Mayoral from Barcelona; Galerie Knoell from Basel; Steven Zevitas Gallery from Boston; SMAC Art Gallery from Cape Town; Koppe Astner from Glasgow; Curro from Guadalajara; Arcadia Missa from London; Charlie James Gallery, Shulamit Nazarian, Park View / Paul Soto, and Matthew Brown Los Angeles from Los Angeles; Fernando Pradilla from Madrid; Maia Contemporary from Mexico City; Mignoni, Yancey Richardson Gallery, half gallery, Martos Gallery, and Kai Matsumiya from New York; Sultana, Polka, and Semiose from Paris; Central Galeria and Galeria Kogan Amaro from São Paulo; Bank from Shanghai; Galería Isabel Aninat from Vitacura; and Larkin Erdmann Gallery from Zurich. Galleries across the world will showcase compelling solo and group presentations of new and historic works from their programs. From South America, Galeria Luisa Strina will present ‘De Sur a Norte (From South to North)’, a trip through the Americas, contextualizing contemporary Latin American art and celebrating Miami as the meeting place of this rich production. Participating artists include amongst others Anna Maria Maiolino, Fernanda Gomes, and Mateo López. Historic works by Faith Wilding and the late Tina Girouard will be brought together at Anat Ebgi. ‘10 artists | 10 films’ by Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, a project exclusively developed for Art Basel's ‘OVR: Miami Beach’, will feature artist films spanning across the past decade, including new works produced in 2020 by Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca, Jac Leirner, and Tamar Guimarães, as well as additional works by Rivane Neuenschwander and Sarah Morris, amongst others.

Prometeo Gallery Ida Pisani’s presentation will focus on two women artists – the Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo and the Kurdish artist Zehra Doğan. blank projects will present a solo exhibition of Igshaan Adams' tapestries, whose practice combines performance, weaving, sculpture, and installation, drawing upon his background to contest racial, sexual, and religious boundaries. ROH Projects will present a site-specific presentation by Kei Imazu and Bagus Pandega that takes places in an abandoned shopping mall in Bandung, looking at the immediate implications of the global pandemic in relation to how spaces have changed in function and how these centers for human activity have decayed over time. White Cube will present an early installation by Tracey Emin, and a new torch down painting by Theaster Gates, amongst other works; Hauser & Wirth's presentation, both virtual and in the gallery's physical space, will focus on masterworks by modern and contemporary American artists including works by Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston, and Simone Leigh. Richard Gray will showcase a varied selection of Modern and contemporary works by McArthur Binion, Roy Lichtenstein, and Joan Mitchell, amongst others. Gemini G.E.L. will present new editions by Toba Khedoori and Ann Hamilton, as well as recent work by Julie Mehretu.

Other galleries will also activate their exhibition spaces in parallel to their participation in the Online Viewing Rooms. In Mexico City, 10 galleries will come together for ‘OVR: Miami Beach Selections at Casa Versalles’, in which they will be recreating their online booths in an early twentieth century villa in Colonia Juárez, inviting collectors to see in person the works featured on the Art Basel platform, with ten percent of sales being donated to Museo Tamayo de Arte Contemporáneo and Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil.

‘OVR: Miami Beach’ will be accompanied by an online Conversations program in the lead-up to, and during its run, starting with ‘50 Years of Art Basel: the 2000s’ on Thursday, November 19, 2020. On Friday, November 27, ‘Voices from Miami’ will be taking the pulse of the art scene in the city today, and on Monday, November 30, Art Basel and FT Weekend will bring together participating artists to discuss their practice. Author and Conversations advisor Edward Winkleman will explore the theme ‘Moving Art Forward in a Time of Uncertainty’ through a series of three talks bringing together prominent members of the international art world to discuss key issues facing the global art scene today. Further onsite programming during Miami Art Week includes The Bass' ‘Art Outside’, an exhibition of contemporary public art in Collins Park and throughout Miami Beach, and ‘Mickalene Thomas: Better Nights’. Pérez Art Museum Miami will present ‘Allied with Power: African and African Diaspora Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection’, ‘MY BODY, MY RULES’, ‘Polyphonic: Celebrating PAMM’s Fund for African American Art’, and ‘Meleko Mokgosi: Your Trip to Africa’, while Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami will present ‘Allan McCollum: Works since 1969’. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) will show ‘Raúl De Nieves: Eternal Return & The Obsidian Heart’; and The Museum of Art and Design at MDC will present ‘The Body Electric’. Exhibitions on view at the renowned private collections include ‘A Possible Horizon’ at the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space, ‘Photography from the archive’ at the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, ‘Witness: Afro Perspectives from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection’ at El Espacio 23; and ‘New contemporary and post war drawings’ at The Scholl Collection. The Rubell Museum will exhibit ‘Genesis Tramaine: Sanctuary’, ‘Hernan Bas’, and ‘Yayoi Kusama: Narcissus Garden’.

The Miami Design District will present a program of exhibitions and activities throughout the neighborhood launching on November 27, 2020. Major international art galleries that regularly exhibit at Art Basel including Lévy Gorvy in collaboration with Salon 94 Design and Mitchell-Innes & Nash will be joined by Jeffrey Deitch, a second Miami outpost of David Castillo Gallery, as well as Ramiken and design galleries Todd Merrill Studio and R & Company in partnership with Cultured Magazine.

Design Miami/ will launch ‘Design Miami/ Podium’, a curated selling exhibition under the theme ‘America(s)’, in the historic Moore Building where the fair hosted its inaugural presentation in 2005. The Miami Design District will also unveil ‘Conscious Actions’, its 2020 Design Commission, which will be integrated throughout the streets and plazas of the neighborhood. The City of Miami Beach will continue its Legacy Purchase Program, purchasing an artwork presented by one of the participating galleries in ‘OVR: Miami Beach’. The Art in Public Places Committee will acquire a work from a gallery based in Miami-Dade County, or by an artist who lives and/or works in Miami-Dade County and/or has a significant connection to the local community. The winner, which will be decided by public vote, will be announced on Sunday, December 6, 2020.
