MARCO in 2012

The call for the 10th edition of Monterrey Mexican Economic Promotion Biennial (FEMSA) –to be held in the early 2012 with the goal of encouraging artistic creation in Mexico–, will be open through December 2011.

The event is dedicated to Mexican artists, or foreign creators that have lived in the country for two years, who must shed light on a collection of two-dimensional or three-dimensional unpublished artworks (two up to four). The works must have been created during or after 2010, and mustn’t have been physically or virtually exhibited. 80 artworks will be handpicked out of all the delivered material and will be exhibited, as innovative element in the event’s history, at Monterrey Contemporary Art Museum. These artworks will be competing for FEMSA Grand Acquisition Award, with $200,000.00 Mexican pesos per category. Another $200,000.00 is signed for FEMSA Collection’s Acquisition Fund, one of the most significant collections dedicated to Latin American modern and contemporary art.

The competing exhibition has been accompanied –since the 9th edition– by an exposition carried out by nine Latin American guest artists, who represent Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Venezuela. Furthermore, a retrospective exhibition will be showcased with works that have been awarded in Monterrey FEMSA Biennial’s editions.

Another tribute to be paid to participants is the granting of two cultural residencies, for artists who obtain honorable mentions per format, awarded by Saint-Etienne Superior School of Art and Design, France, through Monterrey French Alliance.

Word on jury’s decision –made up of experts in visual arts– will be put on the map on April 15, 2012, at FEMSA’s website. The collective exhibition will kick off in June 2012.

Monterrey FEMSA Biennial was instated in 1992, and includes different artistic expressions: painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, object art, graphic, among other. 7201 artists have attended its nine editions and 17093 works have been registered. In order to enrich the selection process, the Organizing Committee invites acclaimed experts in visual arts, who come from Mexico and overseas to join the qualifying jury per edition. The Biennial has counted on the participation of: Agustin Arteaga (Mexico), Jose Bedia (Cuba), Ery Camara (Senegal), Ivo Mezquita (Brazil), Olivier Debroise (Mexico), Teresa del Conde (Mexico), Liliana Porter (Argentina), Osvaldo Sanchez (Cuba), Andrea Giunta (Argentina), Raquel Tibol (Mexico), Philippe Louisgrand (France), Betsabee Romero (Mexico), among other.
