Yang Fudong in Havana

La distancia de la realidad (The Distance of Reality), an exhibit by celebrated Chinese visual artist Yang Fudong, will open on Oct. 5 at the Wifredo Lam Center for Contemporary Art in the Cuban capital.

Yang Fudong (Beijing, 1971) deals with audiovisuals and photography. His first film (Estranged Paradise) was premiered back in 2002 during the 11th edition of the Kassel Documentary, the same year in which he also started shooting Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest, shown at the Venice Biennial in 2007 and other major festivals. Today, Fundong is penciled in as an indispensable figure of China’s artistic scene. In his videos and photos, the artist scours the sensitivity of a new generation in an ever-changing country that boasts massive cultural values that characterize each and every aspect of the everyday life. He graduated from the Chinese Academy of Fine Arts (Hangzhou) in 1995 and has never left his painting origins behind because his videos recreate the pictorial processes through a new and different discourse.

Overall, Yang Fundong’s work depicts a profound preoccupation over the lives of artists and intellectuals, over their relationships with the outer landscape and their inner reflections, over the individual’s identity beyond a cultural system that has kept him on the sidelines and has forced him to redefine his own position.

The artist will attend the exhibit’s opening ceremony that will remain open thru Dec. 7, 2011.
