ARCO Madrid Revs Up

By Jorge Morla Suárez

As national and international press members were gathered at IFEMA, the minister from Holland, guest country in this edition, accompanied by the director of the event, Carlos Urroz, ardently defended the Dutch art, present in Spain for over 500 years, since the days of Felipe II. An art that is presently more accessible than ever, with the presence of this country in the upcoming ARCO fair, where almost 20 galleries from that country will be exhibiting a selection of works.

February 16 is the chosen date, when the princes will be inaugurating the exhibition at IFEMA.215 galleries will be attending the event, out of which 119 represent the 29 guest countries, what proves that ARCO is more international that ever.

We have already reached the 31st edition of ARCO, a proposal with significant new elements. This year, each gallery will handpick an outstanding artist, who will be promoted and whose work will be put on the map. Two topics were highlighted during the press conference: the crisis, present in every sector, though the world of art seems to be kind of safe from it, but it will be also noticed in the most international of the art shows in Spain. On the other hand, the death of master Tapies was also tackled. When Carlos Urroz was asked about possible tributes to the Catalonian genius, he said that they had produced a commemorative video on his life, with the collaboration of RTVE, but the best homage would be selling all of the painter’s artworks during the fair, which are exhibited in several galleries, including the one owned by Tapies’ son.

It revs up on the 16th. The entire world of contemporary art is going to be gathered at the fairground in Madrid, next to the public and inviting important collectors to augment its funds. ARCO is looking forward to repeating the success obtained during the last year edition, and promises to be a must-attend event.
