International Congress: History without a Past

The 2 de Mayo Art Center in Madrid is unfolding on April 20 and 21 a meeting meant to target anybody interested in the current arts. La historia sin pasado: Contraimágenes de la Colonialidad España / América Latina was organized by Yayo Aznar and Maria Iñigo Clavo in an effort to mull over representations in history and the arts in relation with the national discourses.

Peruvian sociologist and political theoretician Anibal Quijano proposes the term coloniality to suggest how colonialism –far from staying lodged in the past- continues to come up with discourses of power, knowledge, representation and difference in today’s society. According to the ones who cooked up this project, the bicentennial celebrations in Latin America have laid bare these colonial structures of the present times and their outreach in Spain’s historic narratives. The congress seeks to review the historic and discursive links between Spain and Latin America in a bid to spark off debates.

Among those attending the event organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Innovation, UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia), the I+D –Imágenes del arte y reescritura de las narrativas en la cultura visual global–, Meeting Margins, Transnational Art in Latin America and Europe 1950-1978 (University of Essex y University of the Arts London), and TrAIN–Transnational Art Nation and Identity) the names of Helena Chavez Mac Gregor (MUAC, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico), Giuseppe Cocco (Universidad Federal de Rio de Janeiro), Loreto Garin Guzman and Federico Zukerfeld (Grupo Etcétera...), Olga Fernandez (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid/ Royal College of Art), Leah Gordon (freelance artist, photographer and video maker, London), Jaime Iregui (Universidad de los Andes), Jorge Luis Marzo (Escuela Elisava/universitat Pompoeu Fabra of Barcelona) and Eduardo Subirats (New York University), among others, stand out.
