Ruben Ramos, Maria Jose Jove Award

One thousand seven hundred and fifty artworks from every corner of the world were showcased during Maria Jose Jove Foundation’s 5th International Fine Arts Award. Ruben Ramos Balsa was the prizewinner, with the piece Estructura de silla con hipercubo y rio con triangulo, which merges the modernity and smoothness of technological means with the tradition of craft production in the shape of an ancient school desk, so the image and the sound of water flowing come out of it.

The jury, made up of Felipa Jove Santos; Rafael Doctor Roncero, historian and art critic; artist Anton Lamazares; Iñaki Martinez Antelo, director of Vigo Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO); Vicente Blanco, prizewinner during the previous edition, and Marta Garcia-Fajardo, director of Maria Jose Jove Foundation’sArt Collection, appreciated “the reflections that underlie Ruben Ramos Balsa’s work, which in this case go deep into the internal dialogue among art, science and education through the technology.”

Ruben Ramos (Santiago de Compostela, 1978) got his degree on Fine Arts, specifically sculpture, and a doctorate at Vigo’s University and Valencia’s technical college. His career is on the up and up, considering the promotion at international events such as the Biennial of Singapore (2011) or Spain’s Pavilion during the 52nd Biennial of Venice (2007). This time, the artist was given 12,000 euros, corresponding to the First Prize.

In the fifth edition of the Prize, the Foundation has given a step forward in terms of its commitment with novel artists, and has increased the artwork-acquisition fund to incorporate another 13 handpicked by the jury. The fifteen finalists are going to be exhibited at the foundation’s venue through June 30.
