Art Basel Miami Beach 2012: Deluxe Galleries

Two hundred fifty seven exhibition spaces from all over the world –31 countries from 5 continents–, carefully handpicked among a significant amount of competing proposals, are going to attend the 2012 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach (December 6 - 9) with pieces of modern and contemporary art.

Nearly 50 percent of these galleries come from America and Latin America (Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay), although there are 34 from Germany, 19 from France and 17 from Great Britain, among others. Art Galleries section, fundamental core of the Fair, counts on 201 exhibitors, and promotes modern art. Besides the returning participants, there is a significant number that comes back in after a “brief break”, such as Art:Concept, Galeria Graça Brandão and Bernard Jacobson Gallery; and this is going to be the first time for: Henrique Faria Fine Art, Galerie Michael Haas and Tornabuoni Art, for example. If you want to check the full list of galleries, visit the event’s website, or directly CLICK on this link. www.artbasel.com/galleries.

The action center for young creators, Art Nova, turns out to be a sort of launching platform for artists –who can exhibit recent works through the galleries that represent them– and evolving proposals. This time, the section includes more than 40 spaces such as Proyectos Monclova (Tania Perez Cordova and Nina Beier); Kavi Gupta Gallery (Theaster Gates and Angel Otero); Galeria Nara Roesler (Brigida Baltar, Lucia Koch and Melanie Smith) and Pilar Corrias (Julião Sarmento and Leigh Ledare). www.artbasel.com/nova.

Emerging art, in Art Basel, means Art Positions, and includes 16 galleries, 12 of which didn’t attend the event last year. Collectors, directors of museum and art critics are going to have the opportunity to admire stimulating pieces created by young artists with international presence, such as Leyla Cardenas (Galeria Casas Riegner), Christian Flamm (Galeria Fonti), Felipe Arturo (La Central) and Irene Kopelman (Labor).

The galleries selected to make up the three previously-mentioned cores will be also showcasing additional works at Art Kabinett –exhibitions with curators in spaces within the pavilions–, Art Video (in SoundScape Park and within five presentation capsules at Miami Beach Convention Centre) and Art Public, a project commissioned by Christine Y. Kimthat is going to transform Collins Park into a public outdoor exhibition space with large-scale sculptures and performances. Likewise, Art Basel Conversations and Art Salon are going to become spaces to reflect on art and market.

Once again, the event will be attended by Miami-based private collections, such as Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), De la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space, The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, Rubell Family Collection and World Class Boxing. Furthermore, there will be some museums with collective and solo exhibitions, such as New Work Miami 2013 (Miami Art Museum), The Endless Renaissance - Six Solo Artist Projects: Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Barry X Ball, Walead Beshty, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Ged Quinn, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook (Bass Museum of Art) and Postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection (Wolfsonian-FIU), among others.

Art Basel presently has venues in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami Beach. Defined by the host city and region, each exhibition is one-of-a-kind. The first edition in Hong Kong is going to be held on May 23 – 26, 2013.
