Espai 13: 35 Years Betting on Bold Creation

The Joan Miro Foundation commemorates this year the 35th anniversary of a space that was born in 1978, Espai 10, named Espai 13 in 1988. The celebration intends to make radiography of the panoramic of emerging art from the last thirty-five years and analyze the context in which this space was created and evolved. Over these years, Espai 13 has been a research and experimentation laboratory in which the most innovative and risky proposals have been put together. For over three decades, the space has been a pioneer when it comes to hosting exhibitions carried out by emerging artists and conceived by independent curators that have been invited to present alternative exhibition projects. Espai 13 has been the most outstanding or one of the most outstanding spaces aimed at artistic research in Barcelona.

Following Joan Miro’s will for the Foundation to be a space open to all types of artistic initiatives, Espai 10 and Espai 13 have host over 300 creators with different exhibition projects, but a common denominator: the freedom of artistic approach and intellectual and creative independence. Among them, we can mention Susana Solano, Frederic Amat, Perejaume, Jaume Plensa, Duran Esteva, Riera i Arago, Jordi Colomer, Jesus Galdon, Ana Laura Alaez, Susy Gomez, Montserrat Soto from Catalonia. Some of the international artists are Bill Viola, General Idea or Cheri Samba, who showcased their first works at Espai 10 or Espai 13, and, nowadays, are acclaimed figures of contemporary art. Some of these artists’ artworks are permanently exhibited at the Sculptures Garden, next to the Foundation.

Haber hecho un lugar donde los artistas tengan derecho a equivocarse. Historias del Espai 10 y el Espai 13 de la Foundation Joan Miro is the commemorative project curated by Manuel Segade that includes a publication and an exhibition to be held in the spring of 2014.

The Foundation begins the celebration of this anniversary by organizing the largest Viquimaraton ever made, which will take 35 hours and will be documenting the artists that have made up this space on the free Viquipèdia encyclopedia.
