Antoni Tàpies. From Object to Sculpture (1964–2009)

Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum inaugurates Antoni Tàpies. Del objeto a la escultura (1964–2009) on October 4th. The retrospective shows the general public one of the most revealing aspects of the Catalan artist: his sculptor facet. The selection, which includes nearly one hundred artworks, carpets his sculptural and object-oriented career, follows his incursions in different techniques and the use of diverse materials: from the first objects and assemblages in the 1960s and 1970s to the recent slashed-and-burned lands and bronze pieces. This production, which covers five decades, represents a one-of-a-kind and autonomous corpus to read the evolution of this artist.

Organized in chronological and theme order, alternating temporal development with the analysis of topics, materials and techniques used by the artist, the show allows viewers to clearly appraise the characteristic elements of Antoni Tàpies’ universe: from his idea of a wall to such objects as chairs, beds or books, that make up his personal vocabulary and get transformed into monumental sculptures or small-sized subtle pieces. The display sheds light on the constant interest of Tàpies in the sculptural problem and makes his sculptural style face itself.
