Museo del Prado | Juan Muñoz. Stories of Art

From 18 November 2025 to 8 March 2026, the Museo del Prado presents Juan Muñoz. Stories of Art, an exhibition devoted to Juan Muñoz (1953–2001), one of the most influential figures in contemporary Spanish art.

The exhibition marks Juan Muñoz’s “return” to the Museo del Prado, a museum he visited frequently and from which he drew lasting inspiration. His work engages in a sustained dialogue with Renaissance and Baroque masters, particularly through the use of perspective, composition and theatrical staging.

Juan Muñoz. Stories of Art brings together a wide range of materials, including installations, sculptural figures, books from the artist’s library, display-case objects, canvases, drawings and prints. These works are presented in Rooms C and D of the Jerónimos building, as well as in several galleries of the Villanueva building.

The exhibition highlights Muñoz’s strong connection with artists such as Velázquez and Goya, and with broader Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque traditions. Some works extend beyond the temporary exhibition spaces into the Museo del Prado’s Permanent Collection galleries and significant architectural areas, including the South Staircase and the exterior near the Goya entrance.

Iconic works such as The Prompter, Conversation Piece and The Nature of Visual Illusion invite visitors into Muñoz’s world of silent and enigmatic figures, suspended between illusion and reality.

The exhibition is curated by Vicente Todolí, former Director of Tate Modern (2003–2010).
