2nd Photography Biennale of Lima Gathers 30 Venues, 32 Shows, 110 Artists

After its opening in 2012 with Spain as guest country, the second edition of the Photography Biennale of Lima, organized by the Image Center and the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, has just teed off with activities scheduled through August, including 30 venues that will be showcasing 32 displays by 110 artists. Gustavo Guntix was in charge of its first edition, and now is the time for general curator Jorge Villacorta, who has Carlo Trivelli and Andrés Garay as associate curators. They have conceived a curatorial proposal aimed at Peruvian documentary, photographic and artistic production, divided into three main sections: "Transitions", "Expressions" and "Transformations".

Among the group of shows included in "Transitions" section, it’s important to mention the first anthology by Roberto Fantozzi (Lima, Peru, 1953) one of the greatest Peruvian photographers, at PUCP Cultural Center, or "Lines, Words, Things" by Luz María Bedoya (Talara, Peru, 1969) exhibited at Germán Krüger Espantosa Gallery - ICPNA Miraflores. Furthermore, "Photography after Photography. To a Post-Photographic Horizon", is set to be showcased at Ricardo Palma Cultural Center’s Raúl Porras Barrenechea Hall and BBVA Hall at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC is the Spanish acronym) of Lima, which puts together the work done by a generation of artists that studied at Gaudí Institute.

“Expressions" includes, among many others, "A Loner and Nature: Guillermo Montesinos Pastor. Artist Photographer in Arequipa 1916-1923", dedicated to Guillermo Montesinos Pastor (Arequipa, Peru, 1877 - 1925), at Luis Miró Quesada Garland Hall, or "The Great Comedy of Life" by young photographer Morfi Jiménez (Lima, Peru, 1976), at BBVA Hall, MAC of Lima.

As for "Transformations" section, we could mention "(Wrong) Archive", an anthology by Miguel Aguirre (Lima, 1973 – presently living in Barcelona), at Germán Krüger Espantosa Gallery - ICPNA Miraflores, "Manuel Moral, Photographer and Editor: Public Sphere and National Image in the 1900 Lima", dedicated to Manuel Moral (Portugal, 1865 - Peru, 1913), at Casa O'Higgins - Ponticia Catholic University of Peru and "The Language of Love: Peruvian Photo-novel 1950-1980", at the Metropolitan Museum of Lima, curated by Daniel Contreras.

Although the core of the curatorial proposal for Lima’s Photography Biennale is made up of sections "Transitions", "Expressions" and "Transformations", the biennale features another three sections: "Special Guests", with the participation of internationally acclaimed creators; "Other Views", targeting the most recent projects of local artists, such as "Lima, a View of the Street" by Jorge Heredia (Lima, 1958), at Pancho Fierro Municipal Art Gallery and, finally, "Flying Over Brazil" section, with Brazilian photography playing the leading role. Likewise, La Imagen - El Ojo Ajeno Center, Pedro de Osma Museum and Spain’s Cultural Center in Lima (CCELIMA) are some of the spaces that are going to exhibit other shows.
