SELVATORIUM: Interworlds Artistic Residence Call

Selvatorium is an event that is set to hold its first edition in October 2014 in El Ensueño estate (cultural rural space), Río Palomino, La Guajira municipality in Colombia. This event represents an effort to gather a group of people interested in working with matters related to art, permaculture, sustainable technologies, autonomous communication, production, transformation and distribution of food and community creation.

The event is going to take place up in the mountain, away from the cities, because the importance lies on fostering the so-called “positive displacement”, in other words, a social movement from cities to the countryside. The cities are overpopulated and represent a non-sustainable long-term lifestyle.

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution in Europe, the world has witnessed an overwhelming exodus from the countryside to the cities. This exodus became stable in Europe throughout the 20th century, but in Colombia it was just starting. Colombia is undergoing an industrialization process and the number of farmers that leave their lands to look for a “better life” in the city is growing. They walk away because the life of a farmer is not profitable, the products they cultivate are not valued by the market and the compulsory expropriation of lands is something common in Colombia.

If we want to stop this exodus, it’s important to promote the creation of educated, sustainable and connected communities, capable of producing and distributing their own products, featuring visible cultural expressions.

We propose to rediscover and reinvent contemporary life and culture in the countryside. It’s necessary to experiment new ways of living in community, building suitable technologies; promoting free culture, food sovereignty, ecologic construction and rural artistic expressions. The event will try to create a space to share ideas on these matters and experiment with them on a unique natural and social field.

This call is open to choose the participating projects. The website offers a full description of the projects that might be interesting to El Ensueño and the region, as well as a list of available tools and materials.

The deadline to deliver projects is June 30.
