Mapfre Foundation Inaugurates Exhibition Hall in Madrid

Mapfre Foundation opened on May 28 its brand-new exhibition hall at Calle Bárbara de Braganza 13, right in front of the National Library, in Madrid. The new exhibition space joins the other halls in Azca and Recoletos in Madrid, features 1.038 square yards distributed in two independent floors and it reaffirms the Foundation’s commitment to the photography program it has developed over the years.

On the occasion of this inauguration, the Foundation showcases the first retrospective display on the work of British photographer Vanessa Winship (Barton-upon-Humber, 1960), which proposes a tour on the different series created throughout her career, from the very first works dedicated to the Balkans to the recent ones in Almería, produced by Mapfre Foundation and included in this exhibition. London-based Vanessa Winship is one of the most acclaimed photographers around the world. In 2011 Winship became the first woman to win the prestigious Henri Cartier-Bresson Award. Furthermore, she has also been given the first award in the World Press Photo’s Stories category in its 1998 and 2008 editions, the award in 2010 PhotoEspaña’s Discoveries category and Godfrey Argent Prize in 2008, awarded by London National Portrait Gallery.

Mapfre Foundation has collected and exhibited photographic works since 2008 when it opened “Collecting the World. Six North American Photographers” in its Azca venue, which included a significant representation of its photographic collection, focused on the second half of the 20th century, and it laid the foundations on a future and steady exhibition program aimed at the photographic world. Ever since, its collection has grown bigger and includes nearly 800 works, and the Foundation has organized an average of 4 photographic displays a year, thus putting on the map outstanding photographers that had not been previously exhibited in Spain.
