Amnesia Colectiva, A Summer School within Preventive Archaeology series. Routes through the Epidermis of History at Fundació Joan Miró

Fundació Joan Miró and Tricentenari BCN announce Collective Amnesia summer school. On July 8 - 11, an international symposium on contemporary memorial culture and a workshop on the oblivion of barraquismo in Montjuïc will stand as spaces to reflect on historical commemorations from the perspective of contemporary art and thinking. Enzo Traverso, Miriam Basilio, Joan Roca and María Ruido are some of the artists that are going to participate in this peculiar meeting space that targets the debate on exchanges that presently take place between visual arts and historic knowledge, with an introduction by Oriol Fontdevila and Toni Soler.

One of Collective Amnesia’s main goals is the interaction between artistic and historiographical practices. That is the reason why the sessions will include interventions by acclaimed voices from both spheres. While the symposium is going to trigger the reflection on the sense and shape currently taken by commemorations, the workshop will be focusing its attention on a specific case with implications on Montjuïc Mountain: barraquismo seen as an example of what the city wants to forget.

Collective Amnesia is part of the reverse idea of one of the most popular concepts in terms of historiography over the past decades, the so-called “collective memory”, a concept formulated by Maurice Halbwacks. Collective Amnesia would refer to the memory lapses or socially repressed memories, beyond commemorations and the officially-declared memory.
