Brazilian President rewards outstanding figures of culture

Brasilia.- Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, gave the distinction Premio al Merito Cultural  to 26 individuals who were prominent in the dissemination and implementation of roots, traditional and national customs.

 

"Culture is a strategic element to building a prosperous and developed country that generates self-esteem among people. Culture gives us the ability to have hope in life and society," emphasized Rousseff at the ceremony held in Planalto Palace (office of the presidency).

 

She noted that the recognized figures represent the extreme cultural diversity, which is one of the most important assets of the nation.

 

 

Among those present at the tribute were the writer Eliane Potiguara, rapper Mano Brown and comedian Henricredo Coelho, chef Alex Atala and singer Marisa Monte, and Afro-descendants and indigenous representatives.

 

 

In activity two special mentions were awarded to deceased persons; Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi and artist Djanira da Motta e Silva.
