Santiago de Cuba- The 35th edition of the International Caribbean Festival, based in Santiago de Cuba, will celebrate from July 3 to 9, the 500th anniversary of the foundation of this town, as stated by the event organizers.
Everything is almost ready for the festival, which has been taking place continuously since 1984, and it has become a meeting point among different cultures and the development of Caribbean peoples, both of Cuba and the continental area and Latin American nations near this sea.
So far, it has been confirmed the participation of over one-thousand foreign students, coming from thirty Caribbean, Latin American and European countries, plus a Turkish representation, students and groups carriers of popular traditional culture in Cuba.
One of the most important moments of the event will be the creation of the Caribbean Carnival Network, an initiative sponsored by the Association of Caribbean States on behalf of praising that musical and dance expression of strong roots among the peoples of this region.
Another outstanding moment will be granting Casa del Caribe International Awards by Cuban poet Waldo Leyva to founders of the meeting and the junkanoo, autochthonous musical and dance expression of the Bahamas Commonwealth, to whose culture is dedicated this 35th edition.
The Caribbean that Unite Us Colloquium will be the main theoretical space, to which the workshop on popular religion, the meeting with young artists Almas Nuevas, the snake and fire parades, the Haitian and Antillean parties, the tribute to the slave rebellion and the Ode to Yemayá will join.
The Caribbean Festival will open in July the festivities, emphasizing them on July 25—on occasion of celebrating the 500 years of the town—and on the 26th, with the celebration of the 62 years of the Moncada Garrison, led in 1953 by young revolutionaries headed by Fidel Castro.
