Cuba Convenes 14th Int'l Guitar Festival

The Cuban Music Institute recently convened the 14th Havana International Guitar Festival and Contest, to be run in this capital from April 17 to 24, 2016. According to statement from the entity, young guitarrists until 35 years old, from any nationality, born after April 17, 1982, could participate in the contest.

The deadline for entering the competition will be on March 25, 2016, and an organizing committee will choose the aspirants.

The jury is presided over by maestro Jesus Ortega, and the repertoire to perform by heart for the first round includes a study of notable Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (a free choice), a virtuoso study of any author or time, and a work composed by a Cuban musician.

For the second round, the winners will play in no more than 30 minutes an important sonata, in any era, style and country, as well as one or more works by a Latin American composer to complete a minimum time of 25 minutes.

Regardless, the jury will give the Isaac Nicola Prize to the most highly qualified Cuban competitor, consisting of a scholarship in Europe with duration of a course and a guitar concert.
