San Francisco’s Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus to perform in Cuba for the first time

One of America’s most distinguished choruses, the Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus from San Francisco, California, will perform for the first time in Cuba at Teatro Tomas Terry in Cienfuegos province on January 9.

In this concert the group—with a varied repertoire ranging from classical to popular music—will feature the special participation of Cantores de Cienfuegos, led by Honey Moreira Abreu.

The Ateneo Hall of the iconic Colosseum in Cienfuegos will witness the opening concert, which is part of a tour that will take the famous group to three other cities in the island: Santa Clara, Matanzas and Havana, where they will share the stage with the best Cuban choirs.

Sacred pieces, American traditional and popular music, spirituals themes and pieces of Cuban composers such as Miguel Matamoros and Guido López-Gavilán will be included in the presentations, which will continue until January 11th at Teatro La Caridad, Santa Clara.

The US chorus will be accompanied this time by the Coro Provincial from Villa Clara province, directed by maestro Yolanda E. Martinez.

It will arrive in Matanzas to give a concert on January 13 at San Pedro Apostol Church, in Reparto Versalles, where they will perform with Matanzas’ Chamber Choir, under the direction of Jose Antonio Mendez.

Once in Havana, the Cabrillo Symphonic Choir will sing with Entrevoces choir, directed Digna Guerra, in a performance to be held on January 15 next in San Francisco de Paula Church.

As part of its first visit to the island, the invited group will hold a cultural exchange with local choirs it will participate in workshops on Cuban music taught by outstanding teachers.
