FITCuba 2016 Gets Under Way in Havana

The 36th edition of the International Tourism Fair officially opened Tuesday at the Havana Grand Theater with keynote remarks by Cuba’s Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, who said the island nation is pleased to welcome tourism ministers from the guest countries, participating delegations, the diplomatic corps, travel businesspeople and other attendees.

“It’s a great pleasure for Cuba to welcome you to this fair dedicated to culture. I must say we’re very proud of our legacy. Havana, the event’s venue, is a unique city, World Heritage,” Mr. Marrero pointed out.

He also hailed Canada, the guest country of honor for this year’s fair and Cuba’s number-one outbound market.

Cuba’s Minister of Culture Julian Gonzalez, and Rene Hernandez, the island nation’s deputy minister of Economy and Planning, also attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Major Cuban bands and musicians performed during the gala night, including the National Symphonic Orchestra, soprano singer and composer Barbara Llanes, the Aragón Orchestra and soloist Claudia Aquino.

Outstanding songs from Cuba’s music portfolio were performed by celebrated musicians. Contradanza from Cuban opera Cecilia Valdes penned by Gonzalo Roig; Noche Azul by Ernesto Lecuona, and Cachita by Rafael Hernandez were some of the classic hits that brought down the house.
