By Alain Valdés

The nominees to the Cubadisco 2016 Awards were already announced. This year the event is dedicated to popular dance music and that will be celebrated in different spaces in Havana from May 14 to 22.

The Award Committee announced yesterday the materials competing in the different categories: Colibrí recording house with 34 nominations, EGREM with 29, BisMusic with 25 and Unicornio with 7; to these are added those of foreign and independents record companies, the last ones with an interesting presence.

In the Dance Music category, which Cubadisco is celebrating, there’s again distinction established between the recordings of career orchestras and those that are making their debut in the record market.

Divided in Maestros and Nuevos Talentos (New Talents) there are ten albums competing for the award, with the CDs La salsa tiene mi son, from Elito Revé y su Charangón; No puedo parar, from Manolito Simonet y su Trabuco; Que no me falte la fe, from Maykel Blanco y Salsa Mayor; Vivito y coleando, from Charanga Habanera; De Cuba soy, from Anacaona and El regreso a La Habana, from singer Aymée Nuviola in the Maestros group.

Regarding the group of Nuevos Talentos there are El Noro y Primera Clase with the record Sin escala, Dinza y Soneros de juventud with Regalando Corazones, Jesús Cutiño with En la cima (attention to this interesting material) and Timbalive with Gasolina de avión.

More than 200 productions, including audiovisuals, were presented to the Award, as told the press Jorge Gómez, president of the Award Committee, a number that shows the artists’ interest for participating in the event and the work developed by the different recording houses.

Other category with great variety of proposals is Traditional Popular Music, where are competing the albums Vamos pa´l monte, from Barbarito Torres y su piquet; Los años no determinan, from Eliades Ochoa and Dúo Melodías Cubanas and El que más goza, from maestro Enrique Lazaga and All Stars del Danzón, among others.

Gómez also announced the special awards, which are works of such importance and quality that deserve such recognition, a category in which the CD-DVD Umbrales competes with all details of the concert maestro Sergio Vitier offered last December at Havana’s Teatro Martí, during the award giving gala of the 2014 National Music Award.

Honorary Presidents of Cubadisco 2016 are Adalberto Álvarez and Elito Revé, whose father will be paid tribute for his legacy to popular dance music on May 20th a great party at Paseo of Carlos III.
