International ballet Festival of Havana kicks off today

HAVANA, Cuba.- The curtains of Alicia Alonso Havana´s Grand Theatre will go up tonight for the opening of the homonymous International Ballet Festival of Havana, which in this 25th edition will feature guests from 16 countries.

The opening night of this biennial event, which will run until November 6th, will start with the piece ¨En la sombra de un vals, ¨a work choreographed by prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso and performed by Sadaise Arencibia, prima ballerina of the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC by its Spanish acronym).

There will also be on the scene the soloist Raul Abreu and the corps de ballet of the Cuban company, host of this event hailed as one of the most prestigious in the world.

Attendees can also enjoy ¨Vals, ¨a creation by maestro Alberto Mendez, and danced by young talents Grettel Morejon and Rafael Quenedit.

The occasion will be conducive to the world premiere of Oscurio, by Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, and starring the excellent ballerina Viengsay Valdes and soloist Ariel Martinez.

This work of about 20 minutes incorporates vigorous movements of contemporary dance, and its conceptualization tries to reflect the conflicting points of human personality with a big load of abstractionism.

¨La Bella Aurora y el Principe Desire¨ will also be premiered in this same evening, represented by ballerina Anette Delgado, while dancer Dani Hernandez will star in La Bella Durmiente (Sleeping Beauty), with a version by Alicia Alonso herself.

All these presentations will be accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of Alicia Alonso Havana´s Grand Theatre, conducted by Giovanni Duarte, who is its director since 2001.

From today and until next November 6th, the capital of Cuba will host the 25th edition of the International Ballet Festival of Havana, which for the first time will take the name of its president and major inspiring figure, Alicia Alonso.
