Rhona Hoffman Gallery is honored to present new and recent work by Torkwase Dyson (Chicago, b. 1973) for the 2020 online edition of Frieze New York. Through a singular abstract vocabulary of "hypershapes", Dyson's paintings and drawings address the continuity of ecology, infrastructure, transmigration, and architecture, through the lens of black compositional thought. Fascinated with transformations, ambiguities, and environmental changes that place these subjects in relationship to each other, her work investigates our connections to imagination, geography, and belonging. The presentation is part of Frieze New York's Tribute to Chicago women artists.
Dyson lives and works in Harlem and Newburgh, NY and received her MFA from Yale University. Solo exhibitions of her work have been presented at New Orleans Museum of Art; Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery, Columbia University, New York; Cooper Union, New York; Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, ME; Usdan Gallery at Bennington College, Bennington, VT; Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Chicago; and Drawing Center, New York.
