Mendive in Mexico with LA LUZ Y LAS TINIEBLAS

Cuban master Manuel Mendive (Havana, 1944), showcases at “Jose Luis Cuevas” Contemporary Art Museum, in Mexico, more than thirty works (paintings and sculptures), gathered under the title La Luz y las Tinieblas (Light and Darkness).

During an interview with journalist Ernesto Lozano Rivero, from La Razon newspaper, the painter summarized the central topic of the exhibition: “The discourse I use in my works is eternal, that’s what I’ve always thought, within this huge stage that is nature and we are surrounded by all of it; but we’re not alone, we’re accompanied by the edifying force and the strength of our ancestors, our gods and dreams, all together at once”.

Mendive handpicks the tonalities of Darkness and Light, according to codes in which he pretends to share and capture his own credo: “love, peace, comprehension, union, with no discrimination due to skin color, ideas, religious credos”.

Awarded in 2001 with the National Prize of Fine Arts, he counts on several movies, and his work has been showcased in numerous performances and exhibitions in galleries and museums from countries such as Somalia, Tanzania, Congo, Russia, Bulgaria, Nigeria, Zambia, Angola, Mozambique, Germany, France, Panama, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Filipinas, Japan, Brazil, Iceland, Mexico, Colombia, Jamaica, Chile, Spain, Martinique, Switzerland, United States.

He has received, among others, the Ville de Fort-de-France medal (Martinique, 1995); Felix Varela Order (Cuba, 1994); Caballero de las Artes y las Letras Order (Ministry of Culture and Francophone from the Republic of France, 1994), and Junior Olympics Medal (Japan, 1989).
