Madrid: The venue of Cervantes Institute displays Don Qui (through May 8). El Quixote de Matta, 35 works (most of them are lithographs) in which artist Roberto Matta interpreted some passages of one of the most published books in the world: El ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra.

The exhibition is just a part of the surrealist artist’s work inspired in the Quixote through the engravings of series Don Qui (1985), Don Q (1985) and Qui D'Eux (1990), this one was donated by the painter to Cervantes Institute.

As part of the tribute paid by the institution in the centenary of Matta, the Don Qui se despliega workshop will be given to children, through the Quixote’s adventure.

In Chile*

As part of the celebrations for Matta’s centenary, Chilean Senate has requested the Executive the creation of a museum carrying the artist’s name, setting the first stone on November 11, the day and month of his birthday. The request, unanimously approved by senators Hernan Larrain, Jose Garcia, Antonio Horvath, Eugenio Tuma, Juan Pablo Letelier, Andres Zaldivar, Jorge Pizarro, Ximena Rincon, Alejandro Navarro, Jose Antonio Gomez and Carlos Bianchi, proposes the creation of a Public-Private Foundation in order to assume the cultural center, gather and preserve his work, get acquisitions and receive donations, as well as becoming an exhibition venue for artists and avant-garde trends.

On the other hand, Germana Matta, widow of the artist, donated money and works to the governor of Bio Bio, Jacqueline Van Rysselberghe in order to build a cultural center in Dichato cove, Tome municipality.

Germana Matta commented that the creator caressed the dream of opening a cultural center in the Chilean coast and, before he died, he made a sketch of this space. That’s the reason why, after the earthquake, Germana visited the zone and met the authorities so as to materialize that dream in Dichato.

Germana Matta announced the delivery of an important collaboration to materialize this initiative, including a tapestry of Puro pueblo es tu cielo azulado, replica of the painting with the same name which got burned, gaining special significance when considering the symbolism of native pavilion in a place trying reemerge after the catastrophe. Governor Van Rysselberghe said that the project is included in the Reconstruction Plan of Dichato, presently on design stage.
