Alejandra Alarcon: THE RIGHT DISTANCE

Barcelona: Until June 4, the Sicart Gallery hosts the exhibit La distancia adecuada (The right distance) by Bolivian artist Alejandra Alarcon (Cochabamba, 1976), as part of the Latin American Perspectives series.

 

Following are a few viewpoints by the artist[1] that will open up ways to help expand the vision and better understand the essence of her work focused on the female being and her roles.

 

“To leave speed aside and make way for quietness and silence.  To place the pieces in order and build a platform to mirror what has been obtained, formed and deformed. The stop on the way is like a threshold to the new road we are looking to walk down, the new shapes we are looking to find, the new landscapes we are looking to fly over. This is how the project of the residence could get ready to take one more leap. In this sense, I would like for the residence-workshop project to be an experience of revision, recycling, as well as a search of paths within the covered ground.

 

“Experience in a residence means: place oneself in a different context and everything it entails, think and rethink, discover other space –geographic and human times, look over again, revise the work itself, refresh the senses, and the from all of that generate works of art and see what happens. In this seeing what happens … I thought of the “Right Distance” as a title of this artistic experience. The right distance to see the development, from a different place. The right distance to judge, to forget, negotiate, balance, touch. Leave away. Distance as time, as breathing. The work as life, seeing oneself through the work from the right distance…

 

“In the workshop residence exhibition we will try to think about these questions on a visual plane; watercolors as immediate means that enables to draw lines of thinking. I want to revise my production, find new readings, work over again starting from questions raised from the visual.

 

“My visual artistic work is related with recycling roles assigned to children stories. I’m interested in reinterpreting and questioning, exposing and unveiling moral values that these stories try to build as universal truths. The work I’ve done over the last two years deals with those topics with precise iconography, those from children stories, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Cinderella, The princess and the toad, Snow White and Rapunzel. The different series explore in several directions the possibility of coming up with repressed desires of girl-women, with the underlying power unveiled by inverting, distorting, mixing and overlaying and recomposing the female image presented in those stories and emulated in the daily life without noticing.

 

“The last series, which I started to work on last year, deals with the symbolic world of love relationships. The imaginary built around the roles of victim and murderer alternating with each other to keep up with the pact they made, even when there is no love left. Hurting, dead, empty, they stick together. I’m interested in representing a world of characters that survive their initial form by building themselves another one, characters that negotiate tragedies with the desire of being different, characters that disguise destiny with new forms of existing from the distance.

 

“All of these series follow a process, a handle them again, connect them, link them again; it is a process in which paths are built and connected with each other in several levels. This series work has a rhizomatous development (in reference to Deleuze and Guattari rhizome, that is, a descriptive or epistemological model in which the organization of the elements does not follow a hierarchic subordination but any element can affect or have an incidence on any other one). I’m interested in building a network of concepts through which I can move at random, with multiple exits and entrances. The creative process I follow is not linear, nor hierarchical, there are multiple connections among the concepts I deal with.”
