Portugal & the Contemporary Art

Going strong as one of the most sought-after shows of the contemporary arts, the Lisbon International Art Fair is year after year luring over 20,000 visitors. Ten editions later, it’s now penciled in as Portugal’s number-one showroom for artistic creation. In fact, since its opening edition a decade ago, the local private sector has been showing an increasing interest in the arts, giving way to such major institutions as the Berardo Collection Museum of the Belem Cultural Center or the Espírito Santo Bank.

Beyond its undisputed grip of the local market, Arte Lisbon has also managed to rally exhibitors from Germany, Hungary, Mexico, Brazil, Mozambique, Korea and Spain. A major contribution in this effort has been determined by the invitations made to renowned curators like Isabel Carlos, Paco Barragan, Oscar Alonso Molina and Filipa Oliveira for the presentation of projects that bear the brunt of the event and has equally spilled over into other exhibiting spaces for debates and discussions with gallery owners and experts. The collaboration with the Dardo (Dart) magazine is a good case in point. In 2011, projects have been handpicked by David Barro (Ferrol, 1974) and it also includes the Collectors’ Program coordinated by the fair’s artistic advisor, Monica Alvarez Careaga.

The eleventh edition of Arte Lisbon will stretch Nov. 23-28 at the Lisbon Convention Center (for this year’s edition) and in the facilities of the Pavilhão do Rio, a project spearheaded by celebrated architect Keil do Amaral.

The deadline for galleries to hand in their registration forms is July 15, 2011.
