(ISLAS) in Guatemala

Only two weeks remain to visit the space formerly known as Arte La Fabrica Guatemala –today Pieggato Arte– and take a look at Diana de Solares’ exhibit entitled (islas) Dibujos calculados con líneas encontradas.

Since 2008, Diana’s work has basically been focused on 3D art and has been marked by the use of disposable materials and random objects, coupled with a conception that gives space a major role to play. In this sense, even though the pieces in islas are non-specific, their relationship with space ends up providing a definition. For instance, there’s a room harboring delicate items, all scattered on the floor, brittle balanced and lit in a way in which their shadows are continuously cast over the surrounding walls as they make up some sort of choreography that “winks an eye” at viewers.

These pieces lay bare the dichotomy between non-permanence and permanence, and between solidity and instability, also seen in some of the artist’s previous works. However, freedom in the use of colors is a highlight that boosts up the sensorial experience and enhances the game of tensions and collaborations among the conforming parts and elements.

Diana de Solares (Guatemala, 1952) has mounted individual exhibits in Italy and Guatemala and has been part of collective exhibitions about her country’s visual arts, like Arte contemporáneo guatemalteco, Sala Juan Ismael, Fuerteventura, Canarias, 2000; Últimos diez años de la plástica guatemalteca, MUSAC, Guatemala, 1998, among others. She’s also exposed in the U.S., Cuba, Mexico and Spain.
