Luis Gonzalez Palma: the purpose of image

Arte x Arte gallery will count on Guatemalan artist Luis Gonzalez Palma at Duhau Park Hyatt Palace, from October 18 to November 2, and at Palais de Glace, within the framework of Buenos Aires Photo fair, October 26 to 30.

Just as Georgia Quintas –curator, art historian and anthropologist– said, “Luis Gonzalez Palma’s work puts poetics apart from improbable elements (and why shouldn’t we include those invisible ones?), in scenes built with disconcerting care, delicateness and skill. Such characteristics are common in artists who are committed to their art, who know pretty well that a fantasizing speech is only shared when it catches the eye of people. That’s when photography finds its sense and existence spot: in Other people.

“Luis Gonzalez Palma’s expressive and consistent career sets fundamental elements for Latin American photography in terms of identity, pertaining, human relationships and concerns due to discoveries related to what’s hidden by the reality. The primordial matter of his creative flow is the magic and mysterious territory of subjectivity. His essays are condensed on the weird aesthetic beauty linked to the strength of fictional elements that are next to the fable. Each picture is showcased as delicate reliquary, planed to the smallest details –from the execution of image construction, the use of experimental photographic techniques, to their handcrafted post-production. The purpose of image, for Gonzalez Palma, doesn’t lie on the image itself, but on the action that brought it about and thoughts born out of it.”

Gonzalez Palma (Guatemala, 1957) lives and works in Cordoba, Argentina. He has carried out exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago and Lannan Foundation, Santa Fe, US; Australian Photography Center, Fine Arts Palace in Mexico; Royal Festival Hall in London, Genova Palazzo Ducale, Italy; and museums Macro and Castagnino de Rosario, Argentina, among others. He has participated in photography festivals such as Photofest in Houston, Les Rencontres de Arles in France and PhotoEspaña in Madrid. His work has been included in acclaimed collective exhibitions such as the 49th and 51st editions of Venice Biennial, 23rd Biennial of São Paulo; 5th Biennial of Havana; and international institutions just like Ludwig Forumin Aachen, Germany; Taipei Art Museum, Korea; Fine Arts Museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Daros Foundation in Zurich, Switzerland; and Conde Duque Palace in Madrid. Some of his artworks are included in several public and private collections.
