Espacio Cultural Excelencias in the International Congress on the Caribbean

Our art gallery in Magdalena 8, in Madrid, will open this Tuesday a number of collateral activities as part of the International Congress on the Caribbean: Genre Cartographies, slated from March 26-29 in the Spanish capital.

The exhibit entitled GPS: Muestra de videoarte caribeñowill open at 8:00pm with pieces by seven artists from the region: Joëlle Ferly (Guadeloupe), Maria Elvira Dieppa (Colombia), Pascal Meccariello (Dominican Republic), Sheena Rose (Barbados), Lazaro Saavedra (Cuba), Argelia Bravo (Venezuela) and María Teresa Diaz Nerio (Dominican Republic/Holland).

Curated by Carlos Garrido (Art History Department, Universidad de Granada) and Dagmary Olivar (YoSoyElOtro Cultural Association/Universidad Carlos III de Madrid), the project makes reference to the camouflage esthetics ingrained in a significant chunk of the contemporary artistic creation in both the Caribbean and worldwide.

The video pieces by these artists share an interest in disorientation and misleading signs. In all cases, the body acts as an element that appears to speak of real places and, in the same breath, is limited to delivering a series of partial or incomplete signals.

Prior to the grand opening, we’ll have the opportunity to enjoy some discussions on Caribbean art, moderated by Jose Luis de la Nuez (Universidad Carlos III Madrid).
