More from the Eleventh Havana Biennial

The workshop organized by Cuban artist Tomas Nuñez (Johnny) at Obispo 465 (Sosabravo workshop) has three more sessions to go, it turns out to be a complement of his collateral solo show during Havana’s Biennial, and its titled Alboroto quieto.

The exhibition is conceived as a space for exchange, confluences and learning, and that’s why two weekly meetings have been held, since last May 16, in which creators practice collective work, by using ceramics as common base. After the Biennial time is gone, there will be a significant collection of ceramics contemporary Cuban art to be showcased at the Ceramics Museum’s temporary hall.

The workshop has already been attended by artists from different expressions, as well as designers: Janette Brossard, Eduardo Abela, Vicente R. Bonachea, Raul Valdes (Raupa), Nelson Ponce, Eliseo Valdes, Ramon Casas, Jose Villa, Tomas Lara, Lesbia Vent Dumois, Carlos E. Prado, Ronaldo Encarnacion, among others. Grisell Rivera, Alicia Leal, Beatriz Santacana and Amelia Carballo will be there on June 2; and Julia Valdes, Rolando Vazquez, Alejandro Faura and Hander Lara have been invited for Wednesday, June 6; while Manuel Cruz, Rafael Consuegra, Julio C. Morrasen, Alberto Fernandez and Guillermo R. Malberti will be working during the last session. The workshops kick off at 10:00 am.

Alboroto quieto is spatial and conceptually organized out of the central piece, a large-format metal sculpture titled Faro. Several ceramics artworks can also be admired, including small-format sculptures, dishes and decorative objects, accompanied by two-dimension installations in which the interest in the symbolic re-elaboration of materials plays the leading role. It’s all about trying to highlight constant aspects in his work: the recycling, the size of works and the interest in the transformation of communitarian spaces through art.
