Three Latin Americans EN SUSPENSION

Starting on September 28 and curated by Iria Candela, Castello’s Contemporary Art Space showcases a collective exhibition made up of three contemporary creators from Latin America: Brazilian Cinthia Marcelle (Belo Horizonte, 1974), Venezuelan Alexander Apostol (Barquisimeto, 1969; presently lives in Madrid), and Mexican Hector Zamora (Mexico City, 1974; currently lives and works in San Pablo).

The common element among the three artists is having reached an important moment in their career, with significant presentations in international events and exhibitions. Likewise, all of the pieces included in the showcase –a group of sculptures, pictures and videos created in recent years– deal with urban architecture and development, and, specifically, disrupted constructive processes.

Works making up En suspension are the result of different approach strategies to the phenomenon, by intervening in empty spaces, documenting into-abeyance buildings or modifying construction materials. But they are all undoubtedly aimed at providing an approach on the crisis of modern urbanism, caused by economic and politic issues. Alexander Apostol’s picture series Skeleton Coast (2005), taken on Islas Margarita, where there is a coastline with hotels and resorts that were never completely built; Cinthia Marcelle’s videos A fonte (2005) and 475 Volver (2009); Hector Zamora’s sculptures of Potencialidades series (2009) andSwiss Modul Tropicalisiert (2010), created with industrial materials –bricks and floor tiles–, which review the ideas of construction and deconstruction in the public space.

The exhibition theme undoubtedly refers to the current crisis faced by the construction industry and the burst of the real-estate boom in Spain. In that country’s east coast and other areas of the world, including Latin America, urban planning and architecture have suffered from inconsistencies, fluctuations and dramatic standstills as a result of stages related to economic increase or decrease.

The exhibition is complemented by a bilingual catalogue (Spanish-English), with texts written by the curator and John Rajchman, as well as interviews to the three artists.

En suspension is going to be open to the public through December 30, 2012.
