Treasures Hidden within Walls

An exhibition of artistic pieces that have been preserved over the years at Purisima Concepcion de las Hermanas Clarisas monastery will be showcased, through December 9, in Chinchon, southeast of Madrid. With Los tesoros de la Clausura, viewers will a one-of-a-kind opportunity on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

 

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition”, the Mayoress of Chinchon, Luisa Maria Fernandez, said to the press after the presentation of the display, which includes paintings, carvings, sculptures, stanzas and retables. We can highlight the table of the Divine Minister, by painter Alonso del Arco; a silver side chapel-urn, the gift of las Descalzas Reales de Madrid to the founder mothers; or the white-marble sculptures placed at the mausoleum of the five Counts of Chinchon.

 

The Church, the convent Cloister and the low Choir (the place where the five Counts of Chinchon were buried) have been prepared for this project that makes up the Touristic Competitiveness Plan of Chinchon. “This exhibition can attract religious people and those who are not religious, since the common element is love for art and history”, the Mayoress has commented on.

 

Chinchon municipality, sited 47 kilometers away from the Spanish capital city, offers contrasts and touristic attractions that include the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion, Lope de Vega Theater or the region’s jewel, Plaza Mayor, declared fourth material wonder of the Community.
