Jorge Vigil: Fear to Heights

Jorge Vigil’s solo show was inaugurated on Tuesday December 4 at Lima’s Enlace Arte Contemporaneo. The title: La cuarta cifra, alludes to the creation period of pieces, worked by the artist over the last two years, just before he became fifty years old.

The exhibition gathers works linked to elements from the artist’s environment and, at the same time, his imaginary. That’s the reason why the real and the oneiric are combined on the canvas, in magic and unpredictable compositions characterized by the fear to heights, which speaks about his fears, his anguish or his delirious wishes. Vigil balances chaos –his chaos– by showing characters that stay equable, peaceful, within the framework of a composition in which viewers can imagine multiple stories.

In a poetic reflection on his own work, Vigil affirms: “the canvas: in this great illusion the only truth is a course: line and color belong to the same tragedy: shadow, that luminous word: ´drawing!´, to move on that inaccessible zone, unlimited: at the end, there is a landscape with crucified butterflies and their revenge, the girl runs after executioners and everything becomes so impeccable. Sharpening my pencils (oh freedom!) there is no room for love, just certain beetles accelerate that point of reason that I always tried to understand.”

Jorge Vigil (Lima, 1963), has lived in Paris since 1990, and graduated in Peru’s National Fine Arts School. In 1992, he obtained the Second Award at Lefranc Bougeois Hall, southwest region; Cadena Award, Villa Montauban, in 1994, y in 2000, the award at the 1st Festival of Villa de Nay, in France.

La cuarta cifra can be visited through January 19.
