ICO Museum - Manolo Laguillo: Reason & City

Manolo Laguillo: Reason & City is the new exhibit that, as part of the PhotoEspaña Festival, has been open since June 20 at the ICO Museum. With this exposition, the ICO Foundation is wagering on a combination of architecture and photography within its nonpermanent exhibit programs. And this time around, it’s done through a thorough and all-out review of Manolo Laguillo’s work (Madrid, 1953) that sways from his early going –a starting point toward his current work- all the way to his artistic pinnacle, clearly reflected in his latest pieces. The exhibit’s discourse is articulated around five major chronological-thematic blocs that bring us closer to Laguillo’s photography as they contemplate the transformation of the city and its ties with photography as a means. Thus, this is no doubt a chance to witness such high-octane phenomena as the shakeup endured by Barcelona during the 1992 Olympic Games and the alterations generated by tourism along the shoreline. All in all, the exhibit is an invitation to think of the city by the hand of someone who’s devoted 35 years of his lifespan to watch the urban phenomenon through the lens of his camera. Laguillo says, “I like to photograph the city (…) as newly built.” And that’s the way it is, stripped of scenography or tricks, just like we see it in this exhibition that’ll remain open thru Sept. 15 at the ICO Museum. In collaboration with La Fabrica, a book-catalog containing texts penned by Valentín Roma, Iván de la Nuez, Alberto Martín, Laura González, Juan Herreros, Javier Pérez Andújar and Manolo Laguillo himself has been put out.
