Ofrenda y Silencio from the Art

By: Maria Carla Garciga

As a call to peace in Colombia, Bibiana Vélez and Cristo Hoyos artists define their exhibitions Ofrenda y Silencio (Offering and Silence), opened on November 25 at the El Reino de Este Mundo gallery from the National Library of Cuba.

Ofrenda by Bibiana Vélez, shows a symbolic and fragmented landscape of the sea waves, a metaphysics of water in constant ascent, accompanied by flowers whose chromatic vividness softens the deadly perspective to give a breath of hope.

"My work has a Caribbean spirit, it is an offering by the fallen," explained Bibiana. "The theme related to the flowers floating on the water reminds us of the offerings given to Yemaya deity. For that reason, the landscape is a symbolic object within it. The wave is like the cyclical part of life; for many of our indigenous mythologies the sea represents the mother. I'm always looking for joy through my painting and invoke the beauty. Colombia has experienced decades of armed conflict and now we are living a very important time referring to the dialogues of peace. Somehow, this exhibition has to do with these dialogues of peace".

On the other part, Silencio by Cristo Hoyos uses the skill screen painting technique to create a series of lilies wreaths, similar at first glance, but different according to the elements adorning them and they evoke moments related to grief, death and violence.

“I have not been able to despise the fact of having grown up in a place marked by a particular social context", expressed the artist. Therefore, my work has the seal concerning the popular and regional issues. Some wreaths are accompanied by Victorian and Christmas ribbons and some others by rope and bar wires. "It is a tribute to the violence victims, so what excites me most of this event is the enabling environment in which is occurring, here in Havana, because of the talks between the Revolutionary Arms Force (FARC, as per initials in Spanish) and the Government of Colombia".

Bibiana Vélez has worked with video, installations and in multidisciplinary productions parallel to painting, an artistic expression that has brought her significant recognitions , such as the first prize at the 32nd National Salon of artists in Bogotá. Her work is marked by autobiographical elements, the so-called highbrow culture and popular expressions in peripheral contexts. They are part of collections in museums of Colombia, America and Europe, and she has also exhibited in Spain, Portugal, France, Ecuador and New York.

Cristo Hoyos is a visual artist, researcher, curator and historian from the National University of Colombia. He has worked with drawing, painting, photography, assemblages and skill screen printing. His work reflects concern by the historical memory, self-discovery, rituals, the crossbreeding and pluralism. He has exhibited in New York, Santo Domingo, Bogota, Caracas, Asunción, Puebla and Antioquia.
