The best of Baroque music at the Valletta Baroque Festival

Built by the Knights of St. John after the Great Siege of 1565, Valletta not only had to be a powerful fortress, and it also turned into a hot spot for culture, economy and politics all over the world. Beautified by the Baroque time, Valletta turned into a city built by gentlemen and for gentlemen.

 

The Valletta Baroque International Festival was conceived to celebrate the Baroque identity in Valletta, the Malta capital. From January 10 and to 24, 2015 people will enjoy this kind of music of that time.

 

After its two first editions, the festival will continue carrying out performances in different emblematic buildings in Valletta, whose architecture reinforces the essence of this festival. The emblematic Teatru Manoel will host the Festival main events , and other amazing buildings such as the Co-Cathedral of St. John and the presidential palace will also venues of such Festival.

 

This festival is dedicated to the memory of the Maltese composer Geronimo Abos since in 2015 they will celebrate the 300th anniversary of his birth. His music will be performed by Die Kölner Akademie, Passacaglia Ensemble and the Valletta international Baroque Ensemble.

 

The Siglo de las Luces Orchestra will perform the Bach passion by according to St. John's Concatedral, while Diluvio Universale by Michelangelo Falvetti will be performed by la Cappella Mediterranea under the direction of Leonardo García Alarcón at the St Plubius Church of Floriana.

 

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Peter Stark, will perform an innovative program of works of the 20th century, inspired by the Baroque style including a concerto for flute by Lukas Foss.

 

The Festival programme also includes music from transcriptions for piano with baroque style by Bach Handel and Gluck music, performed by Dmytro Sukhovienko, to Baroque sacred and profane music from Americas performed by the Villancico Ensemble.

 

Bach music will have a strong presence at this festival; his Cello suites will be performed by the renowned Sigiswald Kuijken.
