Cuban Pianist and US Musicians to Inaugurate Festival in Havana

Cuban world-renowned pianist Frank Fernandez and a group of US musicians from the prestigious Ravinia''s Steans Music Institute, in Chicago, will share the stage on Saturday at the inauguration of the 12th Chamber Music Festival. The Basilica of the Convent of Saint Francis of Assisi, in Havana's historic heart, will host the opening gala of the festival, which will bring together talented professionals and students until April 25.

According to Fernandez, director of the event, chamber music is one of the most complex expressions, because an instrumentalist can be a powerful soloist but when it comes to play with a group he/she has to accompany its fellow musicians and be a powerful accompanist.

One of the most educational events that help most to develop the artists' talent is chamber music, Fernandez, who is also a performer and a composer, told Prensa Latina.

At the opening gala, the US musicians Stella Chen and Tessa Lark (violin), Paul Biss and Steven Laraia (viola) and Haran Meltzer (cello) will perform Felix Mendelssohn's Quintet Opus 87, which has never been played in Cuba.
