Cuban Artists in Havana Biennal

Havana.- A a mural made of bottles by Cuban artist Gerardo de la Llera and his son, was presented here today as part of the 12th Havana Biennial.

The work takes the art of stained glass to represent the island Cuba and recreate the symbolic nature of the stream of the gulf, that half a millennium ago, opened the doors of the New World to Spain.

Such convergence made the Cuban people what they are:. a people whose idiosyncrasies have points in common with Americans and Caribbeans, but they could hardly be confused with such cultures.

This proposal also calls for the defense of the environment and alert on the economic and social differences between northern and southern hemisphere.

The original idea was to make the outline of Cuba with large areas of glass, but decided to do it with bottles manufactured here and others brought from Spain and Africa, for its symbolic value.

It happens that old sailors used to measure the intensity of the currents throwing bottles into the sea, without forgetting the stories on cast messages, or recyclability.

The Biennial officially started last Friday and brings artists from 40 countries, lured by the possibility of taking art to the streets and put to dialogue with their environment and community.
