Jesús Lara's art exhibition at the 12th Havana Biennial

By: Susana Méndez

Irla is the title of the art exhibition that visual artist Jesús Lara Sotelo will inaugurate next May 28, at 8 pm, at the Hall of Mirrors of the Revolution Museum. It is part of the program of the 12th Havana Biennial, whose official opening took place on Friday and it will be extended up to June 22.

The artist reflects a dialogue around Cuban reality, which turns so deep inside the being to rediscover how the island nature leads to the vital functioning of man.

The discursive instances arising from this fact, involve city dynamics of the contemporary subject, so the inside/outside, past/present and sea/land pairs star the latent expressions of our daily lives.

Jesús Lara, being a multidisciplinary artist, does not limit his work to the aesthetic gains that one or another artistic expression may provide to it. Restless and inquisitive, he transcends the conventional frames of the painting, heedlessly involving them with technological procedures fostered by the new media. The harmonious coexistence of the different areas of Visual Arts during their production does not imply an exclusive perspective.

His artworks deviate from the established roads, to delve into new horizons that mutate and regenerate, oxygenating the artistic practices from language innovation. Being a multiple, integral artist, he walks with firm steps, and is fed of all the reality around him, rediscovering in it each creative intention.

Havana City Historian, Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, has said of him: “Lara's work is a perennial discovering of himself; he has become a truth of Marti's thought of what he sees, bringing his visions to his work, and that work has been so particular, so sensitive, so close to that strange spirituality of Cubans which has made him one of the artists and men of the avant-garde and contemporary Cuba”.
