About Buena Vista Social Club Project

Back in 1996 a group of such legendary musicians as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa, Ruben Gonzalez Fontanills and Omara Portuondo, many of which had been members of Marianao-based Buena Vista social club, were summoned by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and US guitarist Ry Cooder so as to record an album at EGREM studios.

This album was an outstanding commercial success and it was praised by critics. It was given a Grammy Award in 1998 in the traditional music category, thus standing out as the most sold production in Ry Cooder’s career.

In 1998 Cooder returned to Havana in order to record another album. These sessions were eternalized by German moviemaker Wim Wenders with a film that also documented the live performances of Buena Vista Social Club in Amsterdam and New York, in 1998. Furthermore, the documentary includes interviews to the musicians in Havana. Wenders’ movie, entitled Buena Vista Social Club, was nominated to the Oscar Awards in 2000 and it won the Best Documentary Award during the European Film Awards.

Ever since, Buena Vista Social Club musical project has visited the main capital cities around the globe with its movie and music.
