Center exhibit to feature work of 19 artists in 5 disciplines

Wailoa Center will be featuring the “Contemporary Craft Invitational” in the Main Gallery from Sept. 4-24.

Nineteen master artisans in the five disciplines of “Craft” have been invited to show their artwork in ceramics, fiber, glass, metal and wood.

“This is the first exhibit of its kind that I have booked at Wailoa which focuses entirely on the idea of fine art contemporary craft,” said Wailoa Center director Codie King. “It is a world I know and the world I come from based on my educational background and experiences.

“However, it is the one exhibit that has scared me the most in trying to produce. I have talked about this show for years and have collected local artists in my mind who I felt would meet this challenge based on their commitment to the material, their dedication to the process involved in using that material and their insistence on creating thoughtful, finely crafted objects that follow both form and function.

“Preparing for this exhibit I found artists whose passion for their craft is their way of life. Several conversations I have had with metal artist Elizabeth Miller gave me the fortitude to move forward and commit to this exhibit, especially when she agreed to coordinate the show.”

The public is invited to a reception to meet the artists from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 4. This event is free and light refreshments will be served. In addition to the reception, the public also is invited to an artist talk/walk through the gallery where they will discuss their work and chosen medium from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 18.

The master artisans participating in this exhibit are: ceramic artists Clayton Amemiya, Will and Kate Jacobson and Esther Shimazu; fiber artists Phan Barker, Pam Barton and Emily DuBois; glass artists Hugh Jenkins and Stephanie Ross, Even Jenkins and Michael and Misato Mortara; metal artists Kirsten Eberly, Amy Flanders, Ethan Froney and Elizabeth Miller; and wood artists Tai Lake, Frank McClure and John Mydock.

Wailoa Center is free and open to the public 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call 933-0416 or email wailoa@yahoo.com.
