Cuba's National Ballet Opens Spanish Tour with Swan Lake

Madrid.- The Cuban National Ballet began its performances in Spain with "Swan Lake" in a crowded hall that received the company and his prima ballerina assoluta, Alicia Alonso, with cheers and multiple applauses. At the Teatros del Canal's red hall in Madrid, the company will perform three programs: "Swan Lake" (Sept.16 to 20) "Carmen," along with "Les Sylphides" and "Celeste" (Sept. 23 to 27) and Don Quixote (Sept.30 to Oct.4).

 

The first performance of the Spanish tour, which after Madrid will cover 13 cities in Catalonia, Castilla y León, and the Basque Country, was attended by Cuban ambassador Eugenio Martinez, Venezuela's Mario Isea, and Panama's Maria Mercedes de la Guardia de Corro.

 

The leading roles are in charge of Viengsay Valdes, Anette Delgado, Sadaise Arencibia, Dani Hernandez, Victor Estevez, Ernesto Diaz, Grettel Morejon, Estheysis Menendez, Jessie Dominguez, Alfredo Ibáñez, Luis Valle, and Leandro Pérez.

 

"Swan Lake," synthesized in three acts and an epilogue, is choreographed by Alicia Alonso, on the original by Petipa-Ivanov, with music by Piotr Tchaikovsky.

 

"Carmen" has choreography and script by Alberto Alonso on the novel by "Prosper Merimee" and script by Meilhac Henry; "Les Sylphides," choreographed by Alicia Alonso based on the version by Mikhail Fokine and music by Chopin, and "Celeste," from choreographer Annabelle Lopez.

 

Madrid's performances will conclude with Don Quixote, a Cuban version choreographed by Alicia Alonso, performed for the first time in 1988 at the Gran Teatro de La Habana, from the original by Marius Petipa.
