CRÓNICA(O).Bipersonal show. Carlos Garaicoa

Parallel to the 4th Poli/Graphic Trienal of San Juan, the exhibition Crónica(o) will be opening with pieces of the photographer and writer Eduardor Lalo and Carlos Garaicoa in the Casa Cortés Foundation.

Curated by Carla Acevedo-Yates, the exhibition takes as a starting point the architectural urban ruin and its exact inscriptions to build a critic reflexion about social, political and economical realities. The project is structured as a dialogue in the immediate context of the Casa Cortés Foundation, el Viejo San Juan, its historical buildings and the experience of the pedestrians through the city.

From Carlos Garaicoa it will be possible to see the photo-etching portfolio Frases (2009). Black and white pictures of the façades of department stores of La Habana, which advertisement signs continue to be clinging to the architecture as a residue of brighter economical times. The interventions made by the artist, establish a poetical and political dialogue, at the same time between the city’s architecture and today’s cuban reality. As well the video-installation End of Silence/ Color floors and End of Silence/ contrasted floors (2010) will be part of the exhibition. These videos collects the oscillating movement of the pedestrians that walk in front of the stores, most of them closed. The names of the stores on the Habana pavement, with its typographic games and elegant materials, persist in time as the trace of a better time, of a past that recites its history despite the abandonment and deterioration of these spaces. Places that resist the indolence of the rushed pedestrians, that do not stops to contemplate the remains of the city landscape.
