LUMINOUS COCOONS
Carpenters Workshop Gallery | Paris is pleased to announce the Spanish artist Nacho Carbonell and his solo exhibition ‘Forest’ in the Marais space this upcoming fall.
After the solo exhibition’s success last year in London, the gallery will be showcasing a selection of Carbonell’s lamp sculptures from his ‘Cocoon’ series including new works such as his ‘Floor Lamp Concrete Base’ range in central Paris. Created in collaboration with the gallery and produced using a unique form of plaster invented by the artist, the works incorporate sand and textile hardener which is then set around a steel frame.
ORGANIC FANTAISIES
Each design skilfully handcrafted, the ‘Cocoon’ lamp series includes only unique pieces. The works are comprised of organic-shaped, semi-transparent cocoons varied in form, fitted to a loosely structured sand-coloured mesh, illuminated from the inside so that the light diffuses through producing a natural warm glow.
Each one different from the other by varying in colours, shape and size, the series includes several floor lamps as well as four hybrid works called ‘Table Cocoons’. These pieces act as both lamps as well as tables encapsulating the imaginative and playful essence of Nacho Carbonell.
VERTIGINOUS BRANCHES
New pieces such as the ‘Floor Lamp Concrete Base’ series suite, are made in the same style with his signature rough finished texture and organic-shaped silhouettes.
What immediately stands out are the immense sizes, encompassing several lights attached to steel ‘branches’ expanding over an impressive height of over 2 meters (6,5 feet).
ABOUT | NACHO CARBONELL
Born in Valencia in 1980, Nacho Carbonell graduated in 2003 from the Cardenal Herrera University in Spain. In 2007 he earned a second degree from the Design Academy Eindhoven in The Netherlands, where two of his graduation projects brought the young designer immediate international attention. The artist is now based in Eindhoven with his team and studio.
Nacho Carbonell creates collectible pieces that span the fields of art and design showcasing his limited-edition designs in galleries, museums and design fairs all over the world.
Design Miami/ and The Design Museum London announced Nacho Carbonell as their artist of the year in 2009 for his highly imaginative collection ‘Evolution’, a set of hybrid seats already using the cocoon pattern to question the dichotomy between public and private space. The artistic credos of Nacho Carbonnell is based on his elimination of boundaries and expanding the field of design by experimenting and searching for new opportunities. Many works imply interaction, inviting the viewer to communicate interactively with the object and to participate in the true process of creation.
The artist’s main goals are questioning conventional ideas of product design, escaping trends, exploring tensions between design and art, form and function, nature and culture. Nacho Carbonell’s approach to work is related to the idea of desiring objects instead of creating something just because of the need of it. Concerned by the idea of objects loosing their value in the long-term, Nacho Carbonell creates pieces that have deeper depth with our basic needs. The artist lets his creations tell their own story by presenting them in a ‘fairytale-like’ manner, which goes beyond pure functionality.
