Misty Copeland gives master class in Cuban ballet school

HAVANA, Cuba.- Open your heart and mind, enjoy; that was the phrase used by American Misty Copeland, principal dancer of the American Ballet Theater (ABT), to open her master class at Fernando Alonso National School of Ballet.

With great emotion the artist returned to tread, after seven years, the academic venue located at Havana´s Prado Street and shared with students of 15 to 18 years of age, with whom she interacted for almost two hours.

Copeland, who makes an official visit to Cuba as part of the Cultural and Sports Ambassadors Program of the State Department, was able to verify the rigor and demand of Cuban art education.

I would have liked to have the opportunity to study ballet from a young age; I think you have a first-rate academy here, "said the artist, who took her first steps in dance at the age of 15.

Surrounded by about 25 girls, several teachers and a giant auditorium, Misty used the time to rectify positions and give advice, while advocating the importance of interpretation and enjoyment of ballet, beyond virtuosity.

Copeland will visit today the headquarters of Acosta Danza Company, directed by Carlos Acosta, and on Thursday she will attend the space of the Lizt Alfonso Ballet Dance Cuba.

In these places she will appreciate the development of dance and the different programs that Cuban artistic education encompass, a specialization that has more than eight thousand students in all.
