Ashraf Geibatov - Justice for Khojaly

With his series of emotionally charged massacre paintings the painter Ashraf Geibatov touches a political aspect in art, which has meanwhile become very rare in contemporary works.

A central theme is his home country of Azerbaijan with all the varied traditions and its lively folklore. However, "the tragic aspects of our recent history have become an integral part of my work," says the artist "The colors of tragedies black and red, rugged lines and the contrast of light and dark tones are to reproduce a metaphysical picture of terror in the paintings. This is my contribution to getting justice for Khojaly."

Our vernissage on February 25th marks the 25th anniversary of the event known worldwide as the 'Genocide of Khojaly' within the framework of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Geibatov, in his series of small formats specially created for the exhibition, transports his own grief, he condenses it into dramatic images and tells of the horrors which do not let him go, representative for his fellow countrymen.

Ashraf Geibatov was born in Baku / Azerbaijan in 1951; he studied at the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi / Georgia, at the Azerbaijani State University and at Azerbaijani State University of Arts in Baku. He is a member of the Association of Artists of UNESCO, received the ‘Ambassador for Peace’ award and is Chairman of the European Society of Cultural Heritage.

He lives and works in Baku and Koblenz.
