Singularity is always already plural; individuals are at once unique in their differences and relational to others. Anthea Black and Thea Yabut create drawings, book works, prints, photographs, and composite films simultaneously together and individually, each mimicking the other’s movements and marks on the surface or page. This repetitive relationality has an allegory in pattern, which is a succession of singularities brought together and recapitulated in all directions. The uneven quality and weight of the lines registered in their Mirror Drawings allows difference and uncertainty to slip into repetition. The gesture of each artist is the same but the effect is not. Every movement contains its own possibility. Repetition and mirroring are processes that don’t disappear into the image; rather Black and Yabut’s images make these processes visible, registering the hands—the materiality—of the artists together and differently.

 

Anthea Black is a Canadian artist, writer, and cultural worker. Her studio works in print, textiles, performance and video have been exhibited in Canada, the US, and Europe and her writing has been published by Bordercrossings, No More Potlucks, Carleton University Art Gallery, TRUCK: Contemporary Art in Calgary, and FUSE Magazine. She is the co-editor of Craft on Demand: The New Politics of the Handmade, with Nicole Burisch. In 2012, she was Viola Frey Visiting Artist-Scholar at the California College of Art and is current faculty at OCAD University in Printmaking, Publications, and Art and Social Change.

Thea Yabut is a Canadian visual artist primarily working in drawing. Her recent solo-exhibitions include, Latticework at Open Sesame (Kitchener-Waterloo), Striations Over the Lattice Site at Line Gallery (North Bay, ON), Lines of Necessity at McIntosh Gallery (London, ON), and two-person exhibition, LIVE FROM PATTERN HUT in collaboration with Anthea Black at Forest City Gallery (London, ON). She holds an MFA from The University of Western Ontario in 2013 and a BFA with Distinction from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2007. From 2013 to 2016 she worked as the Gallery Manager and Curator of DNA artspace in London, ON. She is currently based in Montreal, QC.
