Gustavo Díaz Sosa: another Cuban in Madrid

Until March 9, 2019, the BAT Alberto Cornejo Gallery, of Madrid, presents the individual exhibition De revelaciones a encrucijadas (revelations to crossroads), by Gustavo Díaz Sosa (Sagua la Grande, 1983); a selection of paintings in which the artist talks about the existence of man and the personal crossroads with the paths taken by his own life.

De revelaciones a encrucijadas means, both for us and for the Cuban painter, a long road and many years of work and collaboration, says the gallery in a press release.

And they define the exhibition -the fourth of which they organize-, as "the journey towards the awakening of man, the rebirth of this and / or the awareness of being and of ourselves. The place where we are, probably, is the result of these crossroads".

Through the construction of architectural spaces stained with color, "perfectly enveloped by an aura of mystery", Gustavo Díaz Sosa makes the viewer "reflect on his own destiny, and where it leads. The lines that cross the pieces from side to side transmit that instability in the life of every human being, how fragile it becomes all when doubt, questioning and self-criticism appear ".

According to Carlos Delgado Mayordomo, the Cuban creator "dismantles the traditional vision of the city as a neutral, timeless space ... The artist emphasizes that, currently, our existences travel, with a certain feeling of anguish, for some cities that cost us recognize as their own. Everyday life involves an erratic component that manifests itself in our uncertainty when relating to the environment, while the lack of communication imposes itself as belonging to a world, paradoxically, hypercommunicated ".

His landscapes of large format are not empty cities: they are full of people who, according to the artist in his statement, "flee without knowing where, looking for doors or exits from monumental walls that corner them before the bureaucracy of the ruling order and their established rules. Like sheep, they walk in packs trying to save each other with themselves, while they become increasingly gregarious".

Gustavo Díaz Sosa graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts "San Alejandro" in 2002, and at just 35 years old, he already has a long career, multiple awards and recognitions. He has been represented in the most important contemporary art fairs and in more than 70 solo and group exhibitions. In addition, institutions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Raset Museum have their own pieces in their collections.

Purgatorio (2012), Huérfanos de Babel (2013) y Epopeyas para el Nuevo Milenio (2016) have been his other exhibitions at BAT Alberto Cornejo, a gallery with more than 30 years of experience in Contemporary Art, which currently focuses on the work of young artists who follow a "very contemporary expressive line, prolix creators and undoubted talent"; the latest addition to his catalog has been the Cuban Roldán Lauzán.

The work of Gustavo Díaz Sosa can also be seen at the stand (B11) that the BAT Alberto Cornejo Gallery will have at the Art Madrid 2019 contemporary art fair, at Centro-Centro Cibeles, from February 27 to March 3.
