M Leuven: Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa

The Guatemalan artist Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa creates dreamlike artworks using elements taken from literature, folklore, magic and childhood memories. Rooted in experimental theater and conveying a political-activist dimension, his work explores history, colonization, cultural identity, trauma as well as our connection with nature. Certain elements – such as masks or the act of sleeping – recur regularly throughout his oeuvre and are thus given layered meanings, whether literally, figuratively, philosophically or metaphorically.

Born in 1978, Ramírez-Figueroa is known for his diverse artistic practice. This exhibition presents a new group of sculptures created in 2021 and a selective overview of his work, including performances, films, sculptures, paintings, and installations.

Visually powerful and often humorous, playful or absurd, his work, however, refers to Guatemala's tragic and complex past. His multiple references range from the country's civil war (1960-1996) to the history of silk as well as Mayan culture and its links to China, Mexico and Spain.
