This autumn, across two days, a dedicated landmark sale in Sotheby's Paris will offer over 280 works of art from the extraordinary collection of Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne.
Considered as two of the most pioneering, important and beloved French 20th century artists, François-Xavier (1927-2008) and Claude (1925-2019) Lalanne gave life to a poetic œuvre, injecting the familiar and functional with a dreamlike enchantment and overriding sense of whimsy humor. From the monumental to the miniature, each piece of their collection exudes their playful and unique approach to design.
Highlights will include Claude's emblematic Grand Choupatte ("Cabbage Feet"), Bureau Crocodile ("Crocodile Desk"), tables of ginkgo leaves and her highly sought-after and creative take on jewelry as well as François-Xavier's Rhinocrétaire ("Rhinodesk"), a herd of his whimsical sheep sculptures (Moutons de Peter) and a large bar cabinet designed as a mouflon wild sheep (Grand Mouflon de Pauline). The selection will also include a number of major pieces by artists who were friends of the duo including Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Max Ernst, William N. Copley, Jasper Johns and Elaine Sturtevant.
